Explozone Series 2015-16

Teachers wishing to be part of the Explozone Series offered in 2015-2016 can find a full description of all series at the links below. (link)

1. Mission of the Explozone:

To develop in youth and adults, through innovative, creative and integrated learning experiences the 21st century skills and competencies required for higher education and work.

2. Quick Facts:

     A.  Application:
          a. Teachers wishing to apply for a series can do so by downloading the application form on the Curriculum AbbyConnect page.
          b. Participants are encouraged to work as a team from their school. (preferably teams of 2) Participants
              ​do not have to be from the same grade level.
          c. We encourage team participation so that teachers can engage in collaboration and reflection in order
              to develop ideas and inquiries relevant to their school site and relevant student achievement issues.

     B. Duration:
     Each series is typically a 3 or 4 part series. Check each series description for length of series, dates and
     times.

     C. Planning:
     Most series call for teachers to co-plan their project/inquiry with other series members and/or the helping
     teacher(s) leading the series.

     D. Location:
     Both at the home school and the Explozone. (see series description for more details)
     The Explozone is located in room 104 at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Follow the signs outside the
     school.

3. Learning Outcomes:

All series have been developed with the following learning outcomes in mind:

     A. Practice thoughtful Inquiry and reflection:
          a. Enable teachers to reflect on and critically analyze their own practice to guide future action within
              their classroom.
          b. Understand ways to integrate the skills, concepts and competencies presented in the new BC
              Curriculum.
          c. Consider and apply strategies to develop 21st century habits of mind including Creative Thinking,
              Communication and Social and Personal Interactions.

     B. Design equitable and experiential learning environments:
          a. Instructional Design: Work with helping teachers and colleagues to design approaches to learning
              that emphasize personalization,connect to the world beyond school and offer access and challenge
              to all learners.

     C. Empower a shift to inquiry based learning:
          a. Facilitation: Support and facilitate student and teacher dialogue focused on improving teaching and
              learning.
          b. Collaboration: Learn instructional strategies that promote both collaboration and communication.

4. Commitment Statement:

     A. For Participants: To ensure that all applicants are supported successfully throughout the series we ask
                                       that each participant review the following:

          a. Commit to attending each session in the series including both after school and in-school sessions.
          b. Complete all necessary planning activities.
          c. Agree to the Educator Guidelines 

     B. For School Administrators:

          a. Enable collaboration time for your team at your school site.
           Although some release time will be provided for your team, administrators are committed to supporting
           their team by enabling collaboration time at the school site.

          b. Enable communication of the learning.
           Administration is committed to providing teachers/students time to communicate their learning with
           other colleagues and students.  This could be at staff meetings, departmental meetings, PAC
           PAC meetings, assemblies, etc.  The aim is to share the learning and hopefully get more people
           on board.

5. Learning Beliefs:
Every series offered at the Explozone has been designed according to a set of learning beliefs. These learning beliefs are visibly posted at the Explozone and serve as the foundation for all learning happening at the Explozone.
          A. Teacher Learning Beliefs:  These are written for teachers.
          B. Student Learning Beliefs:  These have been written in student friendly language.
